Visited Merkel for three weeks on a fire assignment to the Incident Command Post at Merkel. LOVED the town, the museum, and Skeets' wonderful steaks. Spent a lot of money on coffee and donuts! Would come back here anytime!!

Here supporting the West Texas IA fire incident. Loved shopping at Wall's, and checking out the shops around town during short breaks or out running work errands. Nice little town, friendly people.

I lived in Merkel from Fall of 1968 through Summer of 1971. I was pledged into the local chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in October of 1970, by, I believe, someone from Ann's Flowers. I'm still in sorority (with a new last name) and would like to reconnect with former "sisters". I drove through Merkel last week and marveled how many things HAVEN'T changed in the 40 years since I was last there! My e-mail is "Bunnidancer@aol.com"

My grandparents Johnny and Bessie Taylor owned the old ice house in Merkel. I was born in Merkel in 1957. Dr. Sadler delivered me. My mother was Mae Dell Taylor and her brother was Emmett Taylor. My grandparents ( mammaw and pappaw) had a small store in the front of their home and sold small items. I remember the house well and the ice house too. I grew up in Abilene/Clyde. and moved to California in 1983. What ever happened to the old ice house?

We have purchased and are reopening the Dairy Queen in a few weeks. We are currently remodeling it. This Monday 4/25/11 from 4-7pm we are hosting a Job Fair at the Restaurant. We are still under Construction; however we will still be conducting interviews. We are looking for full and part time employees. Please be sure to bring your smile. We'll see you there!

Becky- Our family was stationed out at Dyess for almost 4 years. My husband is a c130 flight engineer and we own a house out in merkel. We were just restationed to Kadena AFB in Okinawa, JAPAN. We literally just left Texas a week ago. We still own our house out in Merkel. Its 1022 Avondale and is listed on the MLS websites. Its 3 Beds, 2 baths, 2 car garage red brick home. We had the most amazing neighbors and i miss them dearly :( Merkel is a wonderful place to live and if your going thru the Tye gate on Dyess its about a 15 minute drive to work. Goodluck!

We passed by your town on I20 on Jan. 3, 2011 and I noted that the name of your town was probably the original spelling of my last name (Maricle).
Best wishes in the new year to all your residents.

Does anyone know what the name of the movie was that had been filmed in Merkel? A part of the movie had been filmed at 412 Locust St in Merkel.
Chuck Knight Saturday, October 30, 2010 02:16 PM
The movie was called Independance day (not the one with Will Smith)
